SEATTLE WA- Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has announced that company will begin rolling out packageless delivery by the end of the summer. The new initiative aims to increase sustainability by eliminating the use of non-recyclable plastic packaging and materials. To replace the packaging, a new position has been created at Amazon distribution centers. These new employees are called “holders” and will be an integral part of the delivery process. Once a product is picked from the shelf it is handed off to one of these holders who must hold the products in their arms. Holders are then sorted and packed into the back of trucks, where they are shipped for delivery. Packageless delivery has implications across the e-commerce landscape. By replacing costly materials with cheap labor, Amazon stands to save billions while increasing their competitive advantage. Bezos explained he got the idea when watching a report on immigrants at America’s southern border. “They were packed in there like sardines, you wouldn’t believe how many people were in those trucks. I figured if they could do it, so could we”. The announcement comes ahead of their Q1 earnings reports on April 29th.
